Description
Your chance to own a legend. This mouthpiece is a bit of a holy grail and needs little explanation to those who know their jazz history. This is an unrestored hard rubber M.C. Gregory Model A 4A-18 alto mouthpiece, the exact same mouthpiece played and made famous by the renowned Paul Desmond.
Period literature also attributes the Gregory 'Model A' mouthpieces to artists Art Pepper, Jimmy Dorsey, Hal Kemp,
Skeets Herfurt, Art Ralston, Dan D’Andrea and George Koenig.
These mouthpieces were handmade in Los Angeles from 1936-1947 and are part of the fabric of west coast music history. They do not come up for sale frequently.
Condition is unrestored with a patina of use that reflects a mouthpiece that is nearly ninety years old. Small scratches, knicks, dings, and general wear throughout. Photos speak for themselves and show the critical areas of table, rails, and tip have survived in remarkably nice condition. Very minimal teeth wear. Seller is more than happy to provide additional photos of any aspect of the mouthpiece.
This particular mouthpiece has a very low serial number(#3025), dating it only a few years into production. This mouthpiece was recovered from the stored collection of a serious player in California who had passed away at a very old age, and very likely purchased it off the shelf.
Comes with a Martin ligature and cap.
Returns accepted if requested within 3 days of delivery.
Information from the Theo Wayne website:
"The top bite area (where your top teeth rest on the mouthpiece) is very thin on these mouthpieces. The thinness of the rubber in this area allows for a great deal of vibration in the hard rubber. However, it also makes tooth wear on the mouthpiece a concern as well. These mouthpieces have rounded inner-side walls and a medium sized round chamber. All of these mouthpieces had serial numbers. The facings on these were all hand finished…"
