    TRAVEL AIR
1929 Travel Air Model R Airplane Bank
This Travel Air airplane bank is made of die cast metal with accurate detailing achieved with all logos being pad printed directly onto the plane. It weighs over one pound and is an accurate scale model of the original TRAVEL AIR MODEL R. This replica is 8 1/2 inches long with an 11 inch wing span.
Designed by Herb Rawdon and Walter Burnham and built in secrecy in Witchita, Kansas by Walter Beech, the Travel Air was a low flying monoplane with a fixed landing gear. Wing span measured 29 feet 2 inches, with an overall length of 20 feet 2 inches. Powered by a 420 h.p. air cooled Wright J-6 Whirlwind engine, it achieved a maximum speed of 230 m.p.h!
The Travel Air was flown to Cleveland just before the Thompson races and immediately placed in a hangar and covered with canvas. This secrecy resulted in the plane being called the "Mystery Ship". Douglas Davis flew the Travel Air in the 1929 race and won over six others with an average speed of 194.9 miles per hour setting his first of many records.
