The divided seat of Salli Saddle Chair makes good lower back posture possible
Good posture of the lower back - the so called lumbar lordosis - is the basis of healthy sitting. Such ideal posture can be achieved effortlessly with the divided saddle seat.

Important tissues, nerves and veins are situated on the pubic bone, and squeezing them between the bone and an undivided seat will reduce your genital health. With men the disadvantages are greater than with women.
Unless the chair has a divided seat, there is a greater risk that the sitter might also leave his or her back rounded when sitting, which in turn will cause more lower back pains.
Loose and/or stretchy pants will add to the benefits of the divided seat.

It is estimated that over a half of the adult population suffers from periodic or chronic disorders of the genital organs. Approximately 40% of working age men have some kind of erectile dysfunction. Many women suffer from frequent genito-urinary infections. Recent studies indicate that sitting can worsen these problems by increasing temperatures and humidity in the pelvic region and restricting blood flow to the pelvic area.
Circulation to the genital region
When a person sits there are pressures on both bones and flesh. The bone points are your ischial tuberosities (a.k.a, "sit bones") protrusions off the base of your pelvis. The fleshy parts include your buttocks and thighs and the soft tissue between your legs. Now, you can put as much pressure as you like on the ischials - they're built for it. But the soft tissue is another matter.
The soft tissue between your legs is where all the blood vessels, lymph and nerves that supply your genitalia - male or female - are routed. Pressure here can constrict blood vessels or deaden nerves. When you sit, these sensitive tissues can be pressed between the pelvic bones and the chair, and pressure can radiate to the pelvic floor through the pelvic outlet. The longer the pressure is maintained, the greater the risk of damage.
You can test the sensitivity of your circulation by pressing a vein on the back of your hand with a finger. Only a minimal amount of pressure is needed to block blood flow in the vein. It is not difficult to imagine the huge number of blood vessels and nerves that can be blocked when the weight of the upper body squashes them as you sit on a chair.
There is a wide anatomical variation in the genital soft tissues within the population. Some body types - male and female - are likely to be more susceptible to these sitting pressures than others.
Pelvic circulation can be further compromised when sitting with detrimental 90° hip and knee angles and because of inactivity of the feet. It should be no surprise that health problems in the pelvic organs have increased simultaneously with the amount of sedentary work in Western countries.
Male sexual problems and sitting
Designing a healthy seat for men is more difficult than designing a seat for women. Men’s sitting is impaired by the fact that the male pubic bone is almost twice the length of its female counterpart.
Men tend to sit with their pelvis tilted backwards to relieve pressures to the genitals.
Men have a tendency to sit with their pelvis tilted backwards. This unconscious habit relieves pressure on the root of the penis. With the hip tilted backwards and the back rounded, sitting is advantageous to the genital organs but harmful to the disks in the low back region.

Pressure on the pudendal nerve (the main nerve of the male genital organs) and the surrounding veins can cause impotence in racing cyclists. Some experts believe the same phenomenon occurs when a man sits upright in a conventional ergonomic chair with a 90° hip angle. There have been recent reports of increased erectile dysfunction in Danish male dentists who have been sitting in certain saddle seat designs for many years.

Fashionable tight pants can also squeeze the genital organs, which are highly sensitive to changes in temperature and compression. A sitting survey conducted by R. Koskelo and O. Hänninen from the physiology department of the University of Kuopio in Finland showed that using ordinary clothing when sitting in conventional chairs raises testicular temperature to approx. 37°C (98.6°F). When using a two-part divided seat (e.g.,

), temperatures lowered back to the optimum value of 33°C (91.4 F). A 4°C increase is harmful to the production of sperm cells. The sperm count in Europe has decreased almost by a half during the past 30 years.
Female gynecological problems and sitting
Tight pants combined with the use of sanitary pads and pantiliners can increase the risk of gynecological infection in women who sit for longer periods of time. This is due to inadequate ventilation of the area which leads to increased temperature and humidity. Gynecologists first noticed the phenomenon in the mid-1990’s when the use of pantiliners increased rapidly. Conventional female sitting postures are thought to block ventilation and increase temperatures and humidity in the genital region.
Towards a healthier sitting culture
In our sedentary culture the connection between genital health and sitting is not yet fully understood. Studies are underway to determine whether improved ventilation and reduced pressures to the senitive genital tissues effected by new chair designs will decrease the risk of infection and pressure-related sexual disfunctions.

The effects of high-quality riding-like sitting on human physiology
This article deals with an inadequately recognised sector of health: sitting health. It is surprising how poorly the area is studied and how little attention it has been given. This is particularly noteworthy due to the high amount of Sitting Disorders (SD) caused by prolonged conventional sitting. A large majority of people are suffering from at least some SD every day. The exact impacts of sitting on the metabolism are not at all well known.
Studies on sitting and spinal health have been conducted, but none of them are connected with the pelvic area metabolism that is filled with all sorts of sensitive liquid circulation systems that are surely disturbed when we place the weight of our upper body on them. The most obvious reason for ignoring this field of study is inhibition. It may feel too "uncomfortable" to study issues that are so close to the genitals, or genital and intestine metabolism during sitting.
Salli's research project has a goal: to raise interest and help launch studies on sitting health in all parts of the body. The hip is not the only area that has been neglected, but it is the most important together with the back. Both of them have been very poorly studied.
Over 2/3 of school children have changes in their back structure (poor posture, etc.) as early as the age of 16. Most of them are going to have chronic back pains. The problem has reached such magnitude and the trends are so alarming that something ought to be done. High quality saddle sitting (= an anatomically correctly designed seat with a gap in the middle of the chair) together with a height adjustable table and good elbow supports (= soft, on the sides, adjustable) seem to solve most of the problems. This combination seems to least disturb the metabolism and body functions compared to other furniture solutions and ergonomic concepts.
The following chapters list some of the changes that take place when ordinary people and typical SD patients are introduced to saddle chair sitting (free lumbar posture). These positive changes have been experienced by a large group of customers (more than 100,000). They are confirmed by scientific studies or based on the knowledge of general physiology, and sometimes even on common sense.
Awareness of the body
When people start radically improving their sitting, the effort alone brings about a change in them. People become more aware of their body and muscle tensions. The new type of sitting makes people more conscious of their circulation, back health, posture, overall metabolism and sitting positions, and makes them want to improve their sitting environment.
Back health
Sitting on a saddle seat allows the lumbar vertebras to place correctly. This helps with disc problems and lower back pains. Muscles begin to strengthen due to the correct use of the back. Moving around with the chair and reaching for items becomes easier and risk-free because of the good lower back posture and firm foot support. The correct use of lower back muscles leads to a gradual improvement in posture and a painless life for people with scoliosis.
Tensions in the shoulder-neck area are relived because of better positioning of the thoracic and cervical spine and the better posture of the shoulders. The shoulders and the neck rest freely. Soft elbow supports close to the sides of the body add to the effect.
The neck area tensions are also decreased. Sound formation in the throat improves as the tension in the sound forming organs is relieved. Circulation of blood to the head improves, reducing the frequency of headaches.
Increased relaxation in the neck-shoulder area also helps in getting rid of the mouse-hand nerve symptoms. Poor wrist angle, repetitious movement and muscle tensions, together with a nerve pinch in the kyphotic shoulder area, are the main causes of the mouse-hand nerve problems.
Blood circulation
The sensitivity of the circulation can be tested by closing a vein on the back of the hand by pressing it with a finger. Almost no pressure is required. Imagine how dramatically the circulation is disturbed when we place our upper body weight on our soft tissues and sit almost motionless against a backrest.
Saddle sitting improves the circulation of blood and the operation of the lymphatic system. The impact is strongest in the typical pressure areas (when using a conventional chair) − the hips, thigh muscles and back. In addition, circulation also improves in the typical tension areas such as the upper back. Lower extremities benefit as a result of the wider angles in the hips and in the knees. The performance of the muscles is improved due to easier usage. The ischial bones carry most of the body weight and the pressure on the muscles in the pelvic and thigh area is reduced.
Increased mobility, an alternative to standing
Traditionally, many jobs involve standing, especially in the field of customer service. With a saddle chair, standing is no longer necessary; working on the saddle chair is a great alternative to standing. The employee is approximately at the same height as the standing customer. Less strain on the lower back and increased circulation in the lower extremities help the employee to stay in a good mood and maintain a high quality of customer service. By using a saddle chair equipped with wheels, the employee is able to move effortlessly from one place to another with just a small push from the legs.
Oxygen intake
Using a high-quality saddle chair will increase the oxygen intake considerably. Stiffness in the chest bone and ribs as well as the upper spine area decreases. This, combined with reduced muscle tensions and better posture, will make the whole breathing mechanism work better and allow the chest structure expand fluently, thereby helping the breathing to become deeper. An increased oxygen intake will increase oxygen to the whole body and slow down the process of getting tired.
Pelvic floor muscles
Pelvic floor muscles do not like the pumping movement of horseback riding, but they do like sitting on a saddle chair. Bending and the use of the lower back and pelvic muscles have a positive impact on the general muscle strength of the body. According to EMG measurements, bending over the supporting leg, such as to low shelves or a printer, is good exercise for the pelvic floor muscles. This can be used to enhance the effect of other pelvic floor muscle rehabilitation exercises.
Shoulder joint
Shoulder joint problems are common in professions where the angle between the upper body and the upper arm is more than 30 degrees, such as in dentistry. When using a saddle chair, the angle usually stays smaller than 30 degrees and with a good spinal posture helps to prevent the shoulder joint problem from developing.
Spinal health and internal organs
In traditional Chinese medicine, as well as in traditional Scandinavian medicine, spinal vertebrae, their health and balance are known to have a connection with certain organs and their functions. For example, common problems with L4 and L5 have a connection with the hip, the knee and the blood circulation of the lower extremities, as well as urinary problems and sciatic pain. The problems in other vertebrae also have connections to many other internal organs.
Stomach and intestines
As the upper body posture improves, the pressure to the stomach, small intestine and colon decreases and the stomach is no longer pressed between the hip and the chest. This has a positive effect on bowel movements (peristalsis and its efficiency) and digestion.
A saddle chair with a high middle part without the gap can also indirectly press the anus and the rectum, causing slowing down or postponing of the evacuation reflex.
Beauty
It is justifiable to say that not just the health but also the looks of a person improve with the correct use of a saddle chair. Improved circulation in lower extremities is expected to decrease swelling and the development of cellulite and varicose veins. In addition, the improvement in posture makes the upper body look better as the shoulders are straight and the neck and the head are held up. After sitting for many years, and as we age, the buttocks can become flat and lose its healthy and firm look. A saddle chair can help to reduce these effects.
