1959 Press Photo Woodie Gagliano collects charcoal for radiocarbon dating.
This is an original press photo. Woodie Gagliano, a graduate student in Geology at Louisiana State University, helps the author collect charcoal for radiocarbon dating. If in hunting or fishing along the waterways of the New Orleans area, you come across a mound of shells topped by a grove of live oaks, you may be on the trail of Indians who trod this earth 500 years before Christ was born. In the early 1700s, the French explorers Iberville and Bienville encountered small bands of Indians living on or near the present site of New Orleans. They reported a village of the Quinipissa tribe near the site of present-day Jackson Barracks and a camp called Chinchuba near what is now the foot of Esplanade Avenue.Photo measures 10 x 8inches. Photo is dated 11-22-1959.
