This is an original press photo. Apes roam at will on the rock of Gibraltar, except when they get together in packs and try to raid the town. They are fed and cared for by the occupying British, who have an officer "in charge of apes" at the army garrison. He receives a government allowance of 5 cents a day for the feeding of each animal. An old legend, taken seriously by the British, has it that the British will be force from the rock if the apes ever die out or leave voluntarily. "New blood" was imported when the ape population fell quite low in 1943 and now there are two thriving packs. Their forefathers came from Morocco, when the north African mainland or with the Moors in 711 when they conquered the rock. Photo measures 7.75 x 9.75 inches. Photo is dated 04-17-1952.
Part Number: mjc43254
